Many years ago I had the pleasure of taking a couple Yantra Painting classes with Pieter Weltevrede who was a student of the late Harish Johari. It was incredibly helpful and healing to be able to directly connect my art with spirituality. I also gained some practical skills. I learned the value of slowing down, and taking a precise, methodical approach. I also learned some basic mathematical strategies for drafting balanced and intricate mandalas. After painting the Yantra for Ganesh - the remover of obstacles, Pieter let me paint the Venus Yantra - femininity, sensuality and beauty. The delicate pattern of radiating blue triangles is borrowed from that majestic, sacred image. The rest of this eight-pointed mandala was a fun exploration of geometric shapes, strength and delicacy.
